Default Canon Power Shot SD 970 IS versus Sony DSC T-90

I have always used canon cameras but have recently had a mediocre experience with my PowerShhot SD 800 IS. The zoom lens has gone crazy when you try to extend it. It either goes out too far or too close, no midway point. Also, I have noticed the pictures are increasingly blurry, not sure why.

I am now in the market for the best as regards picture quality camera of the subcompact size. I shoot in a variety of settings, indoor (portraits mostly) and outdoor landscapes. I am not a complete newby but not an expert either. Would love to see a head to head comparison/review of the sony DSC T90 vs the Canon Power Shot SD 970IS.

Am going to Italy on a bike trip and want an small, easy to use point & shoot camera that will fit in my pocket and not be too delicate.

Thanks for any advise you can give. I need to buy this camera pretty soon as I leave shortly.
