I need a new digital camera and use it mainly for documenting collections and need good close-up operation. Other uses are sending pics via email and family snapshots.

Question: Should I spend the extra $100 for the digital SLR, I may need another lens for close-up pics; or stick with the Cannon pure digital with 12X optical zoom that will focus less than 1cm?

I've had real good luck with my dinosaur Canon A10 purchased years ago, but want a better camera for the close-up work.

Provided you are willing to spend the extra money for the Macro lens and a comparable tele zoom, needed on the Pentax DL, the Pentax DL will give you much great flexibility and much better photos.
