Presently looking to replace Panasonic FZ7, been happy with this but now broken!.

Canon has appeal especially the ability to move screen on back. Panasonic looks good with a wider lens than FZ7.

Anybody any experience of BOTH and which have the found best overall.

I accept I need to handle and at the end its personal choice but any advice will be welcome, Thanks

I think the Panasonic FZ8 is the best bang for the $$$ right now. Excellent image quality, fast shooting, great focal range, RAW ability w/ SilkyPix software, outstanding macro mode, you had the FZ7 so you know how excellent the IS works, and just how many fine details the lens captures. Hard to go wrong with it.

Based on my research, I would recommend the Canon S3 IS, as the S5 IS with the larger megapixel count on the same size sensor as the S3 introduced A LOT more noise even at lower ISOs. From the reviews I read, the IS on the Canon is better than the competitors (e.g., Kodak's IS on Z712 doesn't always work as advertised). Problem with the Panasonic line is that they also have noise issues, about as bad as the current Olympus offerings, so even if other features make it appear as a good buy, you'll have to buy a really good noise filter (like Noise Ninja) to kill the noise problem effectively on your computer. That's the way I'd go...
