Couple of weeks ago I had the same question, but in the end I picked the Olympus Verve, only because the pictures had less blurriness/softness and very little sign of purple fringing, when compared to the SD300. And I liked the unique shape(and available colours), all-weather design, and cheaper price (Verve $429 vs SD300 $499 Can.)

You will have to take a look at some of the review sample pics and the user's posted pics to decide if it's okay? (If you mainly print on 4x6 than you won't notice the blurriness/softness or purple fringes).

But on a good note the SD300 does have the speed(quicker shot to shot time), 3x zoom, 2.0 screen, cheaper memory cost, slightly thinner shape, and 640x480 movie clips.

And regarding the 2x zoom and 3x there is a difference but it's not that bad, it just means you will have to move in a little closer on shots. I think the engineers at Olympus figure it would be better to have 2x with good wide angle and sharp image, and small design but not compromise on the picture quality. What Canon did with the SD300/200 is quite impressive. Other manufactures had to use folding lens, or sliding lens design in order to fit a 3x zoom lens in their compact cameras (wonder if Nikon will ever have a compact dig-camera?).

You can't go wrong with either one, I think both the SD300 and the Verve are great cameras when compared to other 4MP compact cameras.
