Hi,

On the advice of members I purchased a Nikon D80 a couple of years ago. I has proved to be a superb choice and I thank everyone who contributed with advice.
The D80 can be a little cumbersome to carry around, so I'm looking for a decent compact camera for everyday use. Obviously quality will be a compromise but that is a sacrifice I will have to make.
Any advice would be appreciated, requirements would be a reasonably wide angle lens and of course decent picture quality.

Err, SLR-like ultrazoom or is no viewfinder Ok?

The Kodak Z-1485 has received good reviews and it offers 5X optical zoom, but has no optical view finder, but a lot of features. It might be worth a look as it is small and pocketable, and very well priced.

If you look in the Kodak Folder, there is a Z-1485 IS photo sample there along with a 100% crop.

Sorry, it doesn't need to be SRL, viewfinder would be nice but not essential. I don't need movies, just decent quality pics and pocket sized.
Does anyone have opinions on the Canon Powershot A480? It seems to tick most of the boxes and is reasonably priced.

The Kodak Z-1485 IS and the Canon A-480 are physically about the same the same size. However, the Z-1485 has a much bigger imager. The A-480 is a very basic camera.

Unless you get lucky with a leftover Canon A590, the A480 is a clear choice for a AA powered camera at that price. Should you prefer a dedicated rechargable battery instead of AA, then the choice would not be so cut and dry.

Please keep in mind that neither the Canon A-590 IS nor the A-480 meet the OP's pocket size requirement.

Good point, thank you. Both are slightly more bulky than I hoped for. Does anyone else have alternative suggestions?

Kodak has a number of ultracompact models to choose from. For current slimline designs around the price of the Canon A480 the retailers are showing the Casio Exilim Z29, Nikon S220, Panasonic FS7, and Samsung SL202 (PL50). That word "current" should be underlined. As you can also expect to find a few more premium models that have been discontinued and now offered at serious discounts. But that closeout market is very volatile, we cannot predict what you will find at the outfits you like to shop. So tell us what catches your eye.

In my opinion, the best choices are:

Kodak Z-1485 IS - $(US) 165.00
Panasonic TZ-5 - $(US) 210.00
