Default Compact For a Keen Teen

I'm about to be in the market for a compact for my soon-to-be 13 yr old daughter. She is a keen and competent photographer, so can handle most compacts, but doesn't prioritise stuff like smile detection and similar non-features. Lens and build quality are more important than gimmicks. She mainly takes outdoor shots including hill-walking and similar knockabout stuff.

Problem is, I'm a dedicated Nikon DSLR person and know next to nothing about the compact camera market. I would really welcome some advice on this issue. I've heard that the Panasonic Lumix range are a good buy: anyone got any other ideas?

The Panasonic ZR1 would seem to be the perfect camera for your daughter. It has 12mp, 8X optical zoom, enhanced OIS and takes HD video. It is a fine camera and Amazon currently has it for $185.00.
