Default At a crossroads with canon 300d

Hi all

New to forum. Looking for any advice for my dilemma. Heres the ugly truth....I bought a used dslr from ebay (gasp!) for under $300 back in July. And I have to say it was a good deal. Two lenses (18-55 and a 70-300) and the 300d. I immediately found what was missing in my photography on full auto. Quicker image processing speeds led to no missed moments or smiles. Sounds like all is well.

BUT recently started to notice that my pictures are dark and always need photo editting enhancements. I also have a dark spot on the sensor that shows up on uniform backgrounds. It's so bad that my wife, who is not a techy or into gadgets, is noticing and wants a new camera.

So here's my question (two parts):

1. Do I pay the $50 to have it cleaned? Or is this such an outdated model that it's time to upgrade? (300d does not have a live view finder, motion capture, and uses cf cards)

2. If I do upgrade what camera should I look at that can use the canon 52mm ef lenses for under $500?

I will take any advice sent my way! Thanks in advance.
