A gray (or grey depending on where you're from and what the current trend is for it's usage) market camera is one not intended for sale in the region you're in.

Nikon USA will refuse to service a gray market camera, even if you are willing to pay them to service it. This is done, in part, to discourage the practice of bypassing Nikon's distribution network by importing them from other countries where they may be less expensive.

Nikon Canada has a similar policy (they will not service a camera that wasn't intended for sale in Canada and purchased through an authorized Nikon Canada dealer, even if you are willing to pay them to service it). So, if it breaks (or needs service of any kind), you're out of luck, sincechances are, only Nikon is going to have the parts and expertise to service it.

Also, be careful, even if you see a dealer advertising something like "USA Warranty". it may bea store warranty (or a third party warranty) that's not worth the paper it's written on. ;)

Make sure you're buying a camera intended for sale in the U.S. if you live here, with a Nikon USA warranty.
