class="post" OK this might be beaten to death here, im not sure but here goes.
I narrowed my decision to the D50 and the D70s. I know all the specs for both of them. So need to tell me that. Image Quality: Are they about the same? I wouldnt say im a complete begginner with digital photograpyhy. But this will be first SLR. I know things like ISO, Aperture, Shutter. What effects they can do etc. I do love doing post work in photoshop. Almost all my photos i do some sort of post work to. The price will be about the same whether i buy the D50 and D70s because if i get the D50 i will be getting the kit lens of the D70s. So thats not a problem. I do all kinds of photography: architecture, macro, action, landscapes etc. I know the D50 makes cleaner less noise images at higer ISO but i dont do much low light shooting. Is the D50 to much of a beginner camera which makes no room to improve and no room to use professinol controls. And is the D70s to hard to learn (manual) for a beginner? So im asking plz from the info a gave and what you know help me make a decision. Thanks in advance. |

The big difference is the extra control the D70s gives you. User selectable ISO's in 1/3 stops (the D50 only has full stops) and the ability to use the pop up flash as a remote commander for the Nikon speedlights (Sb600 and SB800) are main diferences for me. Image quality is very close with the D50 images being a little punchier out of camera. The D50 does do a bit better at high ISO's, but the ability to use 1/3 stops helps the d70s a little (you can shoot at ISO 1000 instead of 1600, which will lead to less noise).
For an everyday camera, the D50 is my choice. It's smaller, lighter, and still offers a lot of control. For studio work, with the extra control, the D70 is the better choice. Either way, you can't go wrong. Both cameras do equally well, in all shooting modes, and I wouldn't worry about the D50 being too limiting or not allowing a photographer to grow, nor would I worry about the d70s being too manual. |

Might be a difference in responsiveness between the two cameras.
Maybe someone here on the forum can compare the two for you. Personally I can't stand shutter lag, or any kind of lag. So whatever has the shortest focusing and shutter lag, go for that. -- Terry |

If that's the case, save yourself some dollars and get theD50.
Probably the quality of the lens will be the determining factor between theD50 and 70D. Save yourself some money and get yourself a high quality walk around lens. |

I`ve got a D50 & 3 lenses....Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.3....Nikkor 50mm f1.8d....Tokina 12-24mm f4.
Have a look at some of my D50 pictures >> www.pixagogo.com/philippeluyckx Both cameras are great ...D50 is a little smaller and works with Sd cards. |

i currently use the d50 along with the sigma 18-200 and getting the nikkor 50mm f/1.8. i got a chance to hold the d70s and found that it has a better grip than the d50 and, as others have said before me, more controls. i think you'd be content with either one. my advice is to invest a little more time in lens research. the 18-70 nikkor is not such a stupendous lens that is worth all the dough it charges. check out the nikon lenses thread for more info.
cheers! |
