This seems too good to be true.

I wouldn't be suprised if it was true. Obviously it won't have nearly as many features as higher end models nor will it's build be solid.

I believe that it shows that Sony is entering the DSLR market with an idea of capturing a good portion of the marketshare, just as JimC was very accuarately predicting months ago.

Sony has already announced it's intent to capture more than 25% of the DSLR market over the next few years, and in meetings with investors, Sony has stated that it wants to get to around 31.7% of the DSLR market, which is about where Minolta's market share was in 1986, after the launch of their Maxxum/Dynax line of SLR models in 1985.
But, the article is flawed. The suggested list price of Sony's first entry into the interchangeable lens DSLR market will list for $899 for the body, or $999 for a body including an 18-70mm lens. Of course, that's list price (and I'd expect to see discounted prices from a number of vendors). As already pointed out, Steve has a preview of this new model here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_.../alpha100.html Of course, wanting market share and getting market share are two different things. But, Sony is already the second largest manufacturer of Digital Cameras in the world (running neck and neck with Canon), looking at DSLR and non-DSLR models combined, and they didn't even have a DSLR model until now. So, I would not underestimate them. Sony recently acquired some of Konica Minolta's assets, and their new DSLR models will be based heavily on Konica Minolta's DSLR models and will be able to use the same lenses (and Minolta has manufactured 16 Million compatible lenses since 1985). Sony is also the largest provider of sensors used in Digital Cameras. Most DSLR models from Nikon, Pentax and Konica Minolta use Sony sensors, and a large number of non-DSLR models from Nikon, Canon, Konica Minolta, Pentax, Casio, Olympus, Pentax and others used Sony sensors. Sony's first entry into the DSLR market will start shipping this week in Canada, and will be shipping later this month in the U.S and other markets. |
