It just seems to me that the camera is a bit much for a guy who is not technically gifted, as you described him. I think, image quality wise, that iit s a great point and shoot camera. You could just have him put the camera into auto mode and snap away.

I would be tempted to get instead a cheaper camera with fewer functions like the Olympus that someone mentioned. I would even go for a Canon A590, which can be enclosed in a somewhat cheap waterproof bag for less than $50 (check Ebay) or in an Ikelite waterproof casing for $260 or so. The A590 takes good pictures, is easy to use, and has a 4X optical zoom versus the 6X optical zoom of the G9. It is also almost 300 bucks cheaper.
