I am looking for a fast shutter or the shortest shutter lag. Right now I have a Canon A60 and it is so slow I am ugrading.

You have experience with Canon point and shoots. The A540 supposedly has very short shutter lag. Steve described its performance as "awesome". Go here for the details: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_.../a540_pg6.html

Yeah, DSLR's will have very fast shutter lags, but they will cost a lot more. I suggest going to a camera store and checking out that A540.

I am also concerned about the flash on the canon. With mine the pictures become so washed out. Almost too bright. When I don't use the flash the pictures are so yellow. Maybe there is a learnig curve with these. I always used my Fuji SLR and wanted to get in to digital. Most of the digital issues are great but the slowness and bright flash have me a little unsure.
