This is almost like the indoor camera question, but not exactly. I need a camera that will take excellent very-close up indoor shots of the details of jewelery for online auctions. What term do I search for that describes a powerful macro setting ? Any recommendations for a camera that's not much over $300 ? thanks

Look for a camera that focuses fairly close in Macro mode- say 3-5cm. Some will get as close as 1cm- though the shadow of the camera will make lighting difficult at that range and you certainly wouldn't be able to use the flash.
Also look for a camera that doesn't have too wide a lens- becoming less popular these days, but something in the region of between 30mm to 35mm will get you closer by default. This pic was taken of a dart with a cheap as chips Fuji J100- which has a 35mm lens... |

Thanks for the good answer, and great photo! You're right, in all my searching the focus seems to be on high zoom function and wide-angle lenses. Not what I want. Most reviews don't even mention the macro functions. I can't be the only one looking for that.
