I don't know exactly why the FZ35 is cheaper than the Canon ultrazooms. Here are some guesses, though.
1. The SX20 is a bigger (physically) and heavier camera.
2. The SX20 has a hot shoe
3. The SX20 has a slightly longer zoom (560mm vs 486mm)
4. Although Panasonic has been making superzooms for a long time, some people will still prefer Canon because of their dominance (with Nikon) in the digital camera market.

I had the FZ28, the previous Panasonic ultrazoom and really liked it. It took pretty good pictures in a wide variety of settings and, in my view, is better than the SX20 in low light.

Yep, I can't put my finger exactly on the price difference either, but for me (and I have a Canon SX1) if you don't need to go hot shoe in the future for good external flash shots then the Panasonic is the better performer. They are very close it has to be said but still the balance tips Pany.
