U can look at,
Canon G12,S95,SX130is, Nikon P7000,S8100, Panasonic LX5,TZ10/ZS7, All of them fit your price range with G12,S95,P7000 & LX5 having larger sensors for better performance in low light. |

pentax k-x is a dslr, and any dslr has better quality pics than even the best of digicams. there is also the you might get lucky and find a olympus epl1 on sale or refurbed if you prefer to do all your shooting in auto.
there are some older sony dslr's that are worth buying, often under $400. |

well we need a little more information.
do you need it to be compact? what will you mainly be taking pictures of? do you shoot low light?
