One of the biggest advantage of alocal "bricks and mortar" camera retailer is that they usually have demo cameras for you to test. My local store willlet me take any of their demo models outside to test with my own CF card... They know me, if they don't know you, you may have to leave a credit card imprint with them in case you disappear.
The local camera store employees are also (usually) much more knowledgeable about the cameras they sell than anyone at Best Buy or Circuit City.
I think the extra cost when dealing with a local photo store is well worth it..
