...and now it's been discontinued (good thing I didn't buy it!).

Should I buy the new SD1000 that Canon just released? I would prefer not to spend above $300.

Any camera you buy today will eventually be discontinued, likely sooner than later. That doesn't make a recently discontinued camera a bad camera. More importantly, you'll likely be able to get a very good deal on a recently discontinued camera.
