I've read a lot of posts and reviews and looked at the sample pictures and I'm going to pick the EOS 350D as my jumping point in the DSLR world. My big question is what lens. These are my needs.

My wife will be using it to take pictures of clothes she sells online. Pictures are taken inside with flash. Some close ups of detail like buttons and such. Reds have always been a problem with my point and shoot digital cameras.

I like to take pictures of the kids indoors and out. I also plan on taking of pictures of birds, nature in general and sunsets.

Will the "kit" lens suite my needs? Money is a concern.

Kit lens will be ok for most of what you want to do. Birds is the exception. You need a long focal length lens to get shots of birds as they are small and usually far away. A sigma 70-300 is cheap and is good for birds a few yards away. Any further and you need seriously expensive gear.
