I currently own a HP photosmart that I have had for years. This camera is ok for taking the occasional picture but uses batteries VERY quickly. I have 9 mos old twins and I want a camera that will allow me to take good quality pictures VERY quickly.

Shutter speed, picture quality and battery life are my three top priorities.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Having started out with a Minolta 4mp S414, which was really quite good, I became quite frustrated with the limitations of a compact. I treated myself to a Nikon D50 SLR a year ago, and have not looked back since. I mainly take family "snaps" and landscapes, and can easily see the difference compared to the compact (even allowing for the 2m extra pixels). I often use a fixed focal length 50mm lens to keep the weight and bulk down; if I want flexibility,I use the kit lens.

The new D40 is smaller than the D50, and simpler to use I gather.

The only major drawback is the lack of a video function on my SLR; having said that, it is not an important feature for me.

I would advise avoiding Nik Coolpix L series; my wife has an L2, and is very disappointed in it in every way except the feel of it in her hand!
