Why not take a look at the Pentax 1stDS body ($(US) 613, combine with a Sigma 28-300mm lens ($(US) 289). The entire kit costs $(US)912. I have had very good luck with wildlife digital photos using that exact combination.

what experience do you have with a camera jarrett?

if you have zero to very little experience you may be better of starting with a nice digicam and learning the ropes for a couple years. and then graduate to a dslr.. dslrs require knowledge of aperatures, dof, post-processing, etc etc to get decent pictures.. if you don't know what i am talking about, then they are probably not your best bet at the moment..

if the above is true.. then you may want to check out a superzoom digicam.. i would take a serious look at panasonics fz-5, sony's h1, and canon's s2 IS..

my pick would be the canon s2 IS as it uses the same digic II processor used in their top of the line dslrs as well as having a nice image stabilized lens withan ultrasonic motor ensuring fast focus..
