Default Looking to upgrade from P&S

I'm looking to upgrade from a Canon SD500 and a Canon S3. I'd rather keep the cost under a $1k and am looking heavily at the Olympus EPL-1 as it seems to combine the portability/zoom of the two cameras I currently have. I'm not as concerned with HD video but it would be a bonus not to need to carry around the Flip Ultra HD as well.

The only concerns I have after reading reviews/comments are regarding the AF issues/speed. Will the AF on the EPL-1 be noticeably better than my current cameras or just comparable or worse? With a baby coming soon I want to be able to catch every shot. I would consider a Pentax K-x, T2i or any other suggestions but the added bulk isn't desirable. Eventually I figure with getting the pancake lens for the EPL-1 I'd have the best of both worlds. Thanks for any info.

The AF issues has been resolved by the lasted firmware 1.1. It makes the epl-1 and the rest of the pen's focus as fast as the panasonic cameras. I have updated my epl-1 which was not really that slow, to 1.1 and it even focus the panasonic 45-200mm G a bit faster. Which before it was upgraded focused pretty fast already. Think the epl-1 got group in with the ep1 and ep2, which was a bit slower then the panasonic G1, GH1, and GF1 at the time.

I also just order the panasonic 20mm 1.7 for the epl-1 and will be testing it out next weekend. So if you want more samples of what the epl-1 can do. Please check out my on going impression thread of the epl-1
