i narrowed my desision down to the sony A380 and Pentax K-X. both come with the larger lense as well 55-200. the sony is just under 200 cheaper, is it worth it to save a bit? How can you compare the 2 together, i know the sony doesn't have video but otherwise in picture quality, low light, etc... would love to here pro's and con's before i go purchase one. I loved the sony 500 but it's way over my price range * sigh*....

The k-x is the better low light camera, and a more modern design with the cmos sensor vs the ccd of the sony. But if you were going with the pentax, I would get the 55-300 over the 50-200 as it is a better lens. So longer lens option with the sony at a decent price point. So the 50-200 is you only real option.
The k-x is the much better low light camera, being able to shoot upto 12800iso, and well at 6400iso. The sony only shoots upto 3200iso. And not sure how well up there. So if low light is the concern, the pentax is the much better camera for this.

the kx is the much better choice here and one of the best values in the entry dslr market right now. image quality is quite impressive and it boasts a good feature set.
the a380 image quality is below the pentax and the viewfinder is super-tiny.

What do you want to shoot?
The Pentax is the better camera. ( See http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en/.../(brand2)/Sony ) But for your particular needs, the Sony might be a better choice.

DSLR's uses a phase detect system, but the pentax on is better then the low end sony one.
