Thanks Sarah and 'interested_observer'

I was originally thinking of a dslr and it still fits the budget, the kit lens on most would be ok for this project. Then I would find an intervalometer for whatever model I chose. Found a good deal on a Sony a390.

You mentioned with DSLR have a mechanical shutter which could wear; that may be true but at a 1 hour interval over a max period of 2 1/2 months, that is about 1800 photos. I would hope the camera would be able to handle much more photos than that. But I do see where you are coming from. Over time, anything can wear out especially with repetitive use.

So, that is still ONE option I am considering.

I will look into the CHDK for the Canon line as well, I haven't heard of that before so I will go over that website.
