I am looking at point-and-shoot cameras for my wife(hopefully she'll let me use it once in a while too :-) I liked the optical zoom feature of these two cameras.

Walmart(online) has the Nikon Coolpix 4800 for about $200 - 4 Megapixel and 8x optical zoom. Even though it doesn't have IS I haven't read any complaints about the lack of it.

For about the same price or maybe $10 more I can get the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ2 - 5 Megapixel and 6x Optical zoom with IS.

Any opinions or recommendations ?

Both have received rather weak professional reviews.

The LZ2 has a higher resolution, and I do think the IS makes the zoom much more useable. An 8x zoom like on the Nikon will almost always produce fuzzy pictures unless you're outside on a sunny day. I also like the "flat" design of the Panasonic better than the "chubby" design of he 4800.

If you really care about zoom, I'd recommend getting a Panasonic FZ4/FZ5, a Minolta Z3/Z5/Z6, or a Canon S1-IS/S2-IS. They're not THAT big, and offer much better performance when zoomed and when in low light.
