Nikon Coolpix series - best image quality?

I am an idiot when it comes to cameras because I know nothing at all. But I do like Nikon and I have been reading about their Coolpix Aw120 and the Coolpix S9700. Unfortunately it seems like the image quality isn't really good enough considering the price of the cameras? Or am I wrong? There are so many Nikons that I just don't know where to start looking.

But does anybody know which coolpix has the best image and video quality? Or would it be better t choose a DSLR in the same price range as the mentioned Coolpix models? Or are they then too cheap to be really good?

The camera would most likely be used every single day, mostly to photograph my kids (boring, I know) and it would be used outside as well as inside and I would prefer a camera that isn't too fragile, which is why I considered the Coolpix AW120. That being said I just really want great image (and video) quality. Gps and Wifi is not really important to me.

If you want to stay with Nikon, look at the P330, wich has a larger sensor, so will be better in low light.

I know someone on the Planet Nikon site that has a P330 and realy likes it. But I think its been discontinued and replaced with the P340.

The P330 is still available at Amazon.
