I currently have a Canon SD300 for a pocket camera and a Minolta DiMAGE 7i.
I love my Canon SD300, and it's the first camera I purchased not made by Minolta (I have film camera that are Minolta's).
I wanted to get the new Canon EOS 40D with 2 nice lenses, but that would be an investment of over 2000$ and I won't have time to use it enough if I purchase it.

So, I decided I will buy another camera that is just below a dSLR (like the DiMAGE was back in 2002) for now. To replace the DiMAGE 7i, and I prefer by Canon.
I generally like the DiMAGE. Takes really good sharp pictures, has enough manual controls, very good zoom (best thing, operated MANUALLY, not electronically), and I like the feel of it.

But I do not like: The electronic viewfinder, the horrible battery life (4AA batteries), the weight (525g without batteries) and very slow writing to the memory.

I am open to recommendations, I looked at the Canon S5 (450g) and G9 (320g).
I just want to have a camera with good quality sharp and not very noisy pictures, good battery life (rechargeable) and fast start up and fast performance (fast AF).
I would like to spend up to 500$.
