Default Safari photos - what lens for Canon EOS 50D?

I think I originally posted in the wrong place. i am going on an African safari and love wildlife photography. Want to do better with it. I am about to buy a Canon 50D needing the speed, low light capability and ability to grow with it. What lens do you suggest? I am replacing my Panasonic FZ20 with 12X zoom which has not really met my needs but has taken some really great photos. Tamron 28-75 was suggested as a good general lens, but Steve used a Canon 20-200mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens. I have no idea if one of these would be right. I need Image stabilization. I have a good little panasonic DMZ-TZ5 for closer general photos. So what do I buy as the primary lens at first for my new 50D for safari/animal photos? I don't want to be changing lenses, if possible - would prefer just to take one lens for the 50D on this trip and not something too huge. I am a small framed woman. Thanks for any help. Lyn
