Went shopping today. At CameraWorld/Ritz they said "camera not on sale, but you get, today only, a free printer, free case, and some other stuff in the digital camera package." At Shutterbug, they said "cameras never go on sale. They have price drops about once a quarter."

(I was looking at Canon A710, G7, Sony H5, Olympus FE-200)

Can one negotiate these "packages"? Do they offer alternatives, such as more memory cards in lieu of all the rest?

When can we expect price drops from Canon or Sony around the holidays?

When do they most often come out with rebates?

You can usually get the best deals after the holidays. They try to get out the old models for christmas and bring in the new models in Feb and March. January is a great time to buy one. Canon's late coming models might be the exception though.

I almost bought my d50 from these guys, until I checked them out on resellerratings.com. Seems they are a bait and switch operation--goes back to the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true, it is:-)

Ok, January still gives me time to get one before my trip in February.

What about the packages that go with, sometimes. Can you negotiate the contents? How much leeway does a salesperson have at a place like CameraWorld or Shutterbug?

Is there a site that shows the price drops over time for certain cameras - I'm thinking that if I look at some of last years models and see what happened to them over 12 months, it might give me some good info in getting ready for a purchase in Jan.
