Soccer Mom needs help buying first digital camera

I am looking to buy my first digital camera. I am not very tech savvy. My son plays high school soccer, basketball and golf and also runs track. I would like zoom, stabilization and clarity. I would appreciate any recommendations that anyone could give me as far as which camera would be the best one for action shots. Thanks!
