Suggest a good digital camera for a noobie

Hi,

Here are the things i am looking for,

A standard *compact* one would suffice.

Standard. If ultrazoom fits into my budget, then it would be even better.

A few manual controls so that I can tinkle around with the camera.

General usage, landscapes, Indoor and Nature mostly.

Nope, I won't be taking printout's at all

A few once in a while.

I am completely new to digital photography, so I have no idea about the various brands. Though i would pefer one from Canon/Panasonic/Konica/Sony

I was looking at the Canon A510, but the shutter lag and the E18 error simply put me off.

Replying withquote. That is a great questionnaire,where did you get it from?

I'm not an expert. For a while I was considering the A510. I decided to wait until I had more money and get something a little more upmarket. The A510 is a good basic camera. Something you might give someone as a gift. But I just didn't feel that I could afford a starter camera, outgrow itand thenmove up to something more advanced.

I'm probably going for the Canon S70, once I have the money saved up. Hoping the price will drop in the meantime. Although, lately I've seen some really nice pics from Kodak cams.
