Suggestions please for 700-gram zoom camera My camera is broken. I have to buy a new one.
My main use of a camera is this: I go into a church and take photos of the architecture from all kinds of angles: maybe 50 shots in as many minutes. No flash. No tripod. No changing lens. No choosing different settings or modes or scenes for different shots. This is what I use now: Fujifilm Finepix HS10 Effective pixels 10m Zoom 30x; 35mm format equivalent 24mm-720mm Image Stabilisation Shooting Weight 730g (ie 26oz) Dimensions 131x91x126 mm (ie 5.1x3.6x5 in) All that works fine for me. I am content with the photos I get. But the camera is broken. It can’t be repaired, and the model is discontinued. So I need a new camera that I can go on using in the way I’ve described. Having more pixels isn’t important. The 30x zoom and image stabilisation are indispensable. I find the above weight and dimensions pretty near perfect; if they were much different I couldn’t hold the camera steady enough. What models should be on the short list for my new camera? |

Bart150- If you like your old Fuji- and was happy with the way it performs, maybe the later Fuji- the HS50- would be the logical way to go...
If you could forgive a slight drop in zoom (24x)- I'd go with the Panasonic FZ200 or the later FZ300/330 if budget allows.... |

Unfortunately the attractive Fujifilm HS-50 is not on sale in my country, the Netherlands. (One dealer’s site even goes as far as stating that it will NEVER be in stock. Maybe people have been pestering him for it?) Starting out from the remaining three mentioned above, I’ve found two more products that seem to be direct competitors. So I have a shortlist of five, in ascending order of price: Panasonic FZ200; Canon SX60HS; Sony HX400V; Panasonic FZ300; Nikon B700. All have a zoom range that I find entirely satisfactory. All have a satisfactory weight. I’d happily pay more if that bought me higher optical quality or better image stabilisation. But would it? I don’t want to spend extra just for such things as multimedia features etc which don’t interest me. Any thoughts? |
The Panasonic FZ200 is an excellent camera, despite it's age (2012).
The FZ300 is more recent and has the same lens and sensor as the FZ200. But it has more features. Of the other cameras the Canon SX60HS is the best choice. In have the Panasonic FZ1000 (next to the FZ200). It's one of the best bridge camera with a much better IQ than the ones mentioned. It has an excellent Leica zoomlens. It's only 16x zoom. I’ve decided to tear up the shortlist in my previous post and go for the Panasonic FZ1000. I said before that I was content with the performance of my present camera, and yet … It seems certain that the FZ1000 with its larger sensor will give better quality pictures in gloomy churches. I will pay extra for that. Unfortunately no dealer in the Netherlands has the FZ1000 in stock at the moment. But they are all advertising it, so I hope I won’t have to wait too long. Bart |
