It depends if you want to spend the time for a dslr. It will give much better toddler photos in low light.

There is one more options. Simple to use like a point and shoot, with dslr quality photos. a mirrorless camera like the olympus epl-1/2, panasonic gf1/2, sony nex5 or samsung nx100. They were design as a solid upgrade form a point and shoot, but will give you lens options.
