Hey all.
Looking to upgrade my Olympus 770 10x...for the next size up. I used the video on my 770 this weekend and it was awful, at 30fps its very juttery, like watching an old silent movie. Bad noise issues on zoom and no IS, which didn't help the video. Contenders are the usual suspects, unless you suggest other. Budget..UP TO FZ30 Prices. MY OBJECTIVES Super zoom 10 or 12 or more Optical Reasonably compact (S2 sort of size) Nature shots, bird shots... bright and cloudy days, shady woodland etc. and everyday point/shoot photos. Wide angle accesories Good Battery life IS Reasonable shutter lag Viewfinder and Screen Good video with zoom facility, sound on camera And the best in low light situations I would like manual zoom, but I think FZ30 is the only one to have that, and it means it is slightly bigger due to the non retract lens, and I have read it doesn't handle low light too well. I notice that S2 prices are dropping like a stone! Your opinions should help out a few people out there. Regards to you all. SG |

Superzooms due to their large focal range, are inherently poor low light performers. Unless you shoot wide open, at the minimum focal range be prepared to use the flash to get decent results.

The Fuji 5600 is the only superzoom that falls into this category, AFAIK. It doesn't have IS, but IS is overrated in my experience (I have an FZ20 that I love, but the IS hasn't helped me get decent photos in low light. If you need stability, you need a tripod.)

Thanks for your replies guys. More or less as I expected. I suppose when they crack the low light issues they'll have a winner!
