Thanks for all the detail Red!

I had actually been considering the D50 for awhile. In theory, it would be nice to have a camera that (with the right lens on it) can pretty much do it all well. But we concluded that at this point in life the odds of my wife spending the necessary time to invest to really take advantage of what the SLR can provide are pretty low. So it might end up as a pretty expensive p&s. Our thinking is to go with one of these for now, then maybe revisit the DSLR again in a few years if we find the need for it.

Anyway, I'll keep in mind some of your likes/dislikes in mind when we go try them out.
