Between the 3, the 500D is the better option. I gives you more lens options. Better AF system, and slightly better low light then the d5000, and allot better then the d3000. That is why the d5000 and d3000 is less then the 500D. The D5000 and D3000 are dropping in price now. The 500D is selling for about 700 us dollars still.

If you added a low light lens, like a 50mm 1.8, the beginner canon one is about 90 dollars, and the mid grade one 50mm 1.4 is only 350 dollars. A 50mm that will auto focus on either nikon is 400-450 depending on weather you get a nikon or sigma lens for it. If you were looking for nikon. The D90 is the better camera, and much better choice.
But if you are looking for a great compact dslr that is also a great value. And you have access to Pentax. The Pentax K-x is a great camera, almost as good as the 500D. The lenses are not as expensive as the nikon if you want a good low light 50mm. It is about 350 for a mid grade lens, like the canon. Pentax do not have as many entry level lenses as canon. So their lenses are on par with the canon mid level lenses. Also it was awarded TIPA's 2010 best entry dslr. It sells for about 690 dollars in the states for a 2 lens kit 18-55 and 55-300mm lenses. And 520 dollar with just the 18-55, with is still less the the d5000 at it's current sale price.

It really does not matter that much, the 500D can shoot everything pretty much. So can the pentax.
