I am considering purchasing a DSLR and narrowed the choices down to the canon and sony. The majority of my photo's are of cars racing, large buildings, mountains, and city shots at night.

Some of my pics can be found on my site:

My major concern is that my hands are not very steady (poor genetics), and i dont have enough money to buy the IS lenses from cannon.

Below are the two packages I am considering with the Sony being $100 more.

Sony DSLR-A100 with Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6/Sony 75-300mm f4-5.6

Canon EOS Rebel XTI with Canon EF 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 & Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6

Which one would you recommend?

If anti-shake (VR, or IS) is important, the sony is the best option of the two cameras you list. Every lens you hang on the A100 will have the benefits of anti-shake. Canon and Nikon's stabilization system is in lens, and although arguably a little more effective, these lenses are relatively expensive.

The A100 will be a great choice if image stabilization is essential to you. The A100 have the build in CCD shake reduction systemwhich Sonyclaimed 3 stops of handheld advantage. (Maybe it depends)

Then the A100 looks like a great choice for you. :-)

Currently not. But the A100 will stillbe a great choice for your criteria.

I doubt if image stabilisation systems stack up like that. thoretically you might end up with a blurry image as both mechanisms need not be synchronised with each other.

if you have one in the body then keep the lens IS free !!! anyway dont think any manufacturer will release IS lenses if they already have in body or vice versa.

Remember stabilization does not work in all circumstances either. It will not stop subject blur that is due to using slow shutter speeds. Also, when using a tripod, IS should be turned off.
