Jim,

Many thanks for that explanation and the link, that clears up the zoom issues as I do not believe I will see that much difference in what I want to shoot between a 300mm and a 420mm!!

"I am looking to upgrade my standard p&s to a camera that will give me a lot more flexibility aswell as expandability for the future as I would like to look into photography in more detail."

If this is your goal, then I would definitely recommend going the budget DSLR route. You will definitely learn more from it than you would from another P&S, and it is, of course, far more "expandable" (though the expansions will not be free), and thus also more flexible... and this flexibility isn't just lenses: filters, flashes, RAW format shooting, and manual control all fall into the equation.

As for the initial abscence of substantial zoom, I guess the importance of that depends on you. For me, its never been an issue, but I can imagine how someone else who naturally tends to see things in a more close up way might desire it. Take a look at the pictures which you've taken with your current camera and ask yourself how important having lots of zoom has been for them.

Thanks Mike. Rodo put me onto Jessops as well. Managed to find a store with a sealed one and picked it up today. Hopefully I've made the right decision.
