I heve been thinking of buying my 9 year old a digital camera for Christmas. All the so called "children's" cameras are too babyish for him, yet I don't want to spend a mint and have it go to flag football practice. It has to be simple to use, so frustration is limited, small, and rugged so I can allow him to take it on his many adventures. Any suggestions?

You might want to look at an Olympus FE-115:

The Canon A530 is really a better camera:

The Canon will give better picture quality. But I think the Olympus might be a bit more rugged. And it is very easy to use for beginners.

The cameras that were mentioned before are great cameras for ease of use and ease on the pocket book, but as with any digital camera....if the 9 year old drops it, gets water on it, and does not take care of it, it will break just as easy as any other digital camera. That's a lot of money wasted if he breaks it within a year of owning it.
