Hi All,

Finally this luddite is going digital from film!

I previously hadMinolta andCanon Sure Shot point and shoot 35MM film Cameras.

I will photographing the usual suspects Family, Kids, Landscapes, indoor and outdoor.

I want a point a shoot but maybe have a hankering to 'fiddle manually' withshots (but maybe this is just a wish list).

Having Looked around I have narrowed it down to 4 cameras,

The PS A630/A640, The SD 800 IS (IXUS 850 IS in UK), PS A710 and the G7.

Best camera, Best features per buck, best images?

Any thoughts guys?

Thanks,

Tim

G7 is the best of the lot, however it doesn't provide the best value.

The A710IS, I believe, gives you the best photo quality vs price. Its usefulness should last for many years. You could argue that the SD800 is a better deal than the 710 because it has a wider angle lens vs longer zoom of the 710, and digic III vs digic ii, and it's smaller for only a few dollars more.

But I think that the 710 is a better family camera because of the extra zoom. The AA batteries for the 710 (vs the SD800's proprietary rechargable) are a plus to some people.

Personally, I pass my camera from family member to family member, and I think a bigger camera is better because you automatically hold on to it tighter. You're probably carrying bags of stuff around for the kids so there's plenty of room for something A710 sized.

good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts digraph.

I was thinking along the same lines - knocked out the G7 on Price (for now may trade up to he next level with my next digicam), A630/A640 on lack of IS. So it's down to SD800 IS and A710 IS.

A710 has manual controls, and 6x Optical Zoom, but have seen reports that flash performance is notvery good and not sure on battery life with only 2 AA's and agree chunkier cameras are easier to hold.

SD800 IS has DIGIC III and that neat face detection system that seems to work and is very compact but no manual controls and only 4x optical Zoom.

Decisions Decisions - Ill let you know what I get.
