is it a good camera. I don't have a budget for an SLR but the fuji looks like one. Would it be good for shooting family pictures and outdoor sites.

Yup, it's a pretty good value for a budget super zoom.

You might also see if you can afford a Sony DSC-H2 insead though. I think it's only about $60 more.

For general all-purpose use? Sure this camera should do quite well. The only real drawback of this camera for general purpose super-zoom use is that it doesn't have any type of image stabalization. It's also big. But for $240, you can't have everything.

Well should I pay the extra 300 dollars for an slr? What about the Pentax k110D? It's only a few hundred more. Woould it be worth it?

There's no simple answer to that question. An SLR certainly isn't going to be smaller. And your shooting requirerments seemed fairly strait forward. What is it you think an SLR will give you that the Fuji doesn't (note: there are a lot of things an SLR COULD give you but what feattures do YOU specifically want that an SLR provides and the Fuji doesn't)?

I want to shoot the moon and the stars too. And I like the way an SLR looks. You can change lenses.

It's great to be able to change the lens, but a decent lens will cost you more than the Fuji alone. The camera body is just the beginning....you can spend a lot of money on just basic equipment for a DSLR.
