I can't because I live on the US West Coast, but some of the other forum members here are from Britain. You can also check out dpreview, which seems to have a lot more members from that side of the pond. I strongly suggest that you visit a camera shop to pick up and play around with the cameras on display. I am not sure what "manual" functions are vital to you. You might even discover that one of the newer cameras is to your liking and within your price range. The cameras that you mentioned considering were all reviewed favorably (especially the Digital Rebel and the 8080), but newer cameras are now faster and better in low light.

One superzoom that I think you might like is the Canon S3IS. You can get it online in Britain for less than 300 pounds/euros? Check out the bottom of the page below to find the names of the etailers and their prices.
