Inside or out? Posed or playing? Playing sports, dancing, jumping? Are you limited to only those two cameras? Why?

The problem with active kids is the shutter lag on most P&S cameras ... I think that is why there appears to be a resurgence in less costly digital SLRs.DSLRs turn on almost instantly and when you press the shutter releasethe shot is taken virtually instantly, several shots in a row. My 30D is ideal for fast action shots, but it is a bit large for many users (I am a pro photographer). I tend to leave it on all the time (virtually no battery drain) and it is ready to instantly shoot all the time.

Of your two choices (I shoot Canon — not cannons that go boom — and Sony), both are good with little shutter lag once turned on ... and both take about a second to save the shot before you can shoot another.

Between the H5 and S3, flip a coin!
