I was thinking about buying the CanonS3 IS, when i noticed that it has an EVF. I think i would prefer an Optical Viewfinder over teh EVF, but is it that bad?

The one positive I see with these small all-in-one cameras having an electronic viewfinder is it shows 100% of the image collected by the sensor. The digicams with optical finders have both parallax issues and they only show around 80% of the image field.

The ultimate optical finder is the one you'll find on a digital SLR, even if they don't all show 100% of theimage and some are smaller, more "tunnell-visioned"than others, I prefer that over the electronic viewfinder. However, I do see how models like the S3IS and all those Panasonic DSLR-like digicams benefit from the electronic finder. I've even considered an S3IS myself as the way to get around not being able to take my DSLR's into some professional sporting events. I just can't get myself to pull the trigger on a purchase of $300-$400because I'm afraid it'll just sit in the bag and never get used.

No, it's not bad....just different. It does have some advantages (like you can preview the shot from different angles & directions). With a fixed optical viewfinder you are restricted to framing your shots by where ever you can fit your face behind the camera (or shoot blind by holding the camera over your head or close to the ground).

my problem is that the EVF is much slower than an Optical viewfinder.

I like the Viewfinder on my EOS Elan II filmSLR camera and im pretty sure its optical.
