The A-710 Is CAN take accessory (screw-ontype)lenses and the external flash is actually a slave flash, not a trueexternal flash mounted on a hot shoe. Both the lenses and the slave flash are described in detail in this review:


I believe that it might be a very wise thing to visit a camera shop where you can handle the cameras that you are interested in and see the difference between 6X and 12X optical zoom.

There are third party external slave flashes available that will work with almost any digital camera. They generally have a braket which will attach to the tripod socket. And they are triggered by the on camera flash. You have to be able to adjust the camera's exposure manually to compensate (so really should have a camera with manual controls, or at least exposure compensation). In some cases you can manually adjust the flash output.
