David-

Perhaps either the title, sub title, or message text was cut off on your post. Can we assume that you are looking for a small easily pocketed point and shoot camera for your wife?

How much is a decent zoom? 4X? 6X? 10X?

I think the Panasonic TZ-1 might be interestering for you. The TZ-3 might be so, too.

David-

The Panasonic TZ-1 is a very compact camera with IS and a very handy 10X optical zoom. It is a very capable camera. As promised, here is a sample photo taken with the TZ-1's built-in flash at ISO 100. Another good possibility might be the Sony W-35, W-70 or W-100. They are very small cameras, but only have 3x optical zoom and they do not have image stabilization, or IS.
