I am interested in purchasing one of the less expensive dslrs. So, I went to the local Circuit City to examine what they had available (there isn't a camera shop close to where I live). I was able to examine the Canon Xti, the Sony Alpha, the Nikon D80 and the Nikon D40. As I went down the line looking through the viewfinders, I was startled at the extreme brightness and clarity of the D40. I was so surprised that I looked at the lens to see if a high speed, fixed focal length lens had been mounted on the camera. But, it just had the kit lens like the others. So, I began to wonder if something was wrong with the other display models. Has anyone had a similar experience or not?

At the big chain stores it is very difficult to even find a dslr that even works. These display models have been abused to the degree that I would never consider buying one. The D40 could have just been put on the shelve and the others have seen a long life on display. See if you can find a place with these models so you can really try them out. C. W.

If I lived close to a camera store, I would have visited one. That is why I asked the question. I was concerned that something was off with the display unlits. Is there anyone that has compared the viewfinder of the D40, K100D and the Xti?

Whilst not fully familiar with these camera's viewfinders - isn't the brightness adjustable ? Maybe the D40 was at full strength ?
