I am salivating over the Olympus 550, something with a huge zoom AND begins with 28 mm, so I hear.

But then I heard that Olympus uses their own memory card.

You know what? I have compact flash. I have sds. I'm sick and tired of buying new media for every device. I refuse to buy a camera that does not take mainstream digital media.

SO, my question is this...

An ultra zoom

--begins at 28
--250 or more
--uses SD cards or Compact flash
--hardware image stabilzation
--6 megapixels are more
--fixed lens not changeable, digital slr

Does anything fit that bill at the moment?

xD cards ARE 'mainstream' standard cards

go with the Olympus if it suits your requirements

what leads you to believe compact flash is here to stay?!

well, that is helpful. ( Isn't there some relationship between Fuji and Olympus in this respect though?)

I still find it incredibly annoying that I have to buy yet another series of cards---and one that won't work with my card readers to boot. So, new card readers, too! Let's see. A new one for the desktop. A new thumb model for the laptop. When i travel, I can have the pleasure of taking the SD cards for my Treo, the xD for camera, the thumb drive, the card readers...Things could be done a lot more simply without all the proprietary warfare.

Anyway...

I'll reserve judgment on Olympus, but in the meanwhile with respect to the original question---is there anything else out there that meets my specs?

Oh really who but the codevelopers Olympus/Fuji uses them????

You don't want to have semi or entirely proprietary (SONY gum stick)) memory... then stay away from Olympus, Sony and some Fuji.... though at least F's high end cams (like S 7/9000) are at least dual media using CF and XD.

SD seems to be the new CF both in popularity and capacity, and therefore as or cheaper than CF these days.
