The Z612 has a smaller sensor, but it's also is 4 or 5 years more advanced than those old Canons in sensor design.

To my eyes, I can see where the G3 might be preferred over the Z740. It's outdoor shots seem to have better exposures and better color. But even the Z740 is two years old at this point.

I have to give the image quality advantage overall to the Z612. Outdoor shots are very close. Indoors, the Z612 beats it pretty clean. The Z612 obviously has some resolution advantage, but it's shots also look a bit sharper, and it has less noise, especially as you dial the ISO up to 200 or higher.
