taking pics of kids is like taking pics of pets. They never sit still.
Your best bet is to get one of those cameras with a large LCD with no
optical hole, no need for an EVF either.
The Casio EX-Z60 series performs great.

the Lumix DMC-FZ6 is great.

Based on what I've seen on these forums a high percentage of us that participate would prefer an optical finder for almost everything except macros. That's my inclination as well. I like EVFs if I can't justify a DSLR.

I own a Z612 and I'm very satisfied and it is smaller, lighter than the S3IS.I'm wondering if a 4-5x zoom P&S similar to Kodak C885 or a Canon A540 might suit better than a super-zoom. In other words keep the S3 and supplement with a 4-5x, 7-8MP camera.

Canon A710IS is often referred to as the S3s little brother.... or a poor man's G7. I chose the A710 over the S3 for the pocketable size as well.
