Optical viewfinder - ability to frame shots in bright light, follow moving subjects (panning) and you can nearly double the number of pix you can take if you turn the LCD off (to say 1000)

AA batteries - 500 shots with 2 rechargeables, and have nearly unlimited backup options. For me, one constant source of disappointment in any digital/electronic toy has always centered around a proprietary Li-ion battery.

Yes, the visibility of the LCD in very bright sun can be a problem. I had the same problem with the TZ-1, the forerunner of the TZ-3. However, I did manage to solve that problem nicely on the TZ-1 and now on the TZ-3 as well. I simply installed a hood manufactured by Delkin.com that is very effective.
